Last Friday we went to Orana Park, and learnt about crazy things! At 9:30 we went on a bus to Orana Park it took about 40-45 minutes by bus to get there. When we got there we meet our instructors Michael and Elizabeth, they were very nice letting us take the shortcut way into Orana Park. When we finally got into the zoo we walked to the Gorilla/ Gibbon enclosure they were really cool ! We learnt about the Gorillas and there names, at their enclosure they have a little box to recycle your phone batteries ! I never knew you could do that how cool right. Next we learnt about the Gibbons and how the hands are cupped so they can grab onto things better, also their hands look identical to their feet also so they can grab on to tree branches/ ropes better.
Next, we went to the cheetahs ! But it was really windy so you couldn’t see them sadly because they were resting underneath a tree how relaxing, after talking about the cheetahs and how their back is the main part of the body that makes them go really fast Vanessa/ Elise’s Mum spotted a cheetah looking directly at us ! So we all rushed up to get a better look at it, and it looked viscous ! After that we went to the Rhinos and their horns were massive it was crazy, we heard them making such cool noises or it was just me, and even got to feel one of their horns, in my opinion it didn’t feel too nice.. Did you know that its actually illegal to own a rhino horn ? Because Rhinos might go extinct because people chop of rhinos horns, and the rhinos need their horns because its their defence.
Im skipping through some enclosures because there was way to many! After lunch, we saw the boulder copper butterflies and the habitat that the kind workers had built for them, how nice is that? We saw the giant plants that they lay eggs in too. Then we saw our nocturnal bird the kiwi ! Pests like stoats, possums, rats, ferrets are eating the eggs and the baby kiwis thats sad. Then we saw the wonderful keas and they were getting feed some grubs but they had to dig with their beaks to get to them.
Lastly we saw the adorable baby otters and Meerkats so cute ! They looked like they had little beady eyes, and fluffy skin. I would definitely go again it was so cool and interesting!
Have you been to Orana Park? If you have do think its cool?
