Viscosity science !

Today in room 1 we learnt about viscosity, and what it is. How we experimented this was we went into groups of 5 or 6 and got some liquids and they were, washing up liquid, golden syrup, baking oil, and water. We got a board with number 1-8 and placed the liquid on it while the board was flat, and after that we titled the board slowly upwards and saw the viscosity. The highest viscosity was the water and the lowest was golden syrup.

Reading Reflection T3

In term three we have learnt a lot of stuff mostly aimed at reading, we have been learning about poetry and explanations. I will go over them all in just a minute !

Poetry

First of all, there are so many types of poems so here are  some examples, haiku, , and free verse. These were the main poems we focused on. The haiku poem is a japanese poem and it starts off with five syllables then seven, the five again, how cool right.

Then we have free verse, free verse is just do whatever, you can rhyme you don’t have to rhyme. Its technically just freestyle just be you! Here is my poem.

Explanation writing

Explanation writing is all about just explaining something not giving out instructions. You can pick heaps of different topics like how does popcorn pop? So use creativity and imagine what you know the most and explain it dont give instructions!

Do you like writing poems?

Canva Animation

Today we went on a meeting call with some kids from Belfast School, and they showed us how to make a animation on Canva! It was so cool, their names were Poppy and Piper. Here’s what they showed us how to do !

I liked this because it was so cool because I had no idea how to do this it was a complete shock.  What I liked is that you didn’t need heaps of slide to just make something  move you just had to move an image !

Have you ever made a animation on canva before ?

Orana Park Trip

Last Friday we went to Orana Park, and learnt about crazy things! At 9:30 we went on a bus to Orana Park it took about 40-45 minutes by bus to get there. When we got there we meet our instructors Michael and Elizabeth, they were very nice letting us take the shortcut way into Orana Park. When we finally got into the zoo we walked to the Gorilla/ Gibbon enclosure they were really cool ! We learnt about the Gorillas and there names, at their enclosure they have a little box to recycle your phone batteries ! I never knew you could do that how cool right. Next we learnt about the Gibbons and how the hands are cupped so they can grab onto things better, also their hands look identical to their feet also so they can grab on to tree branches/ ropes better.

Next, we went to the cheetahs ! But it was really windy so you couldn’t see them sadly because they were resting underneath a tree how relaxing, after talking about the cheetahs and how their back is the main part of the body that makes them go really fast Vanessa/ Elise’s Mum  spotted a cheetah looking directly at us ! So we all rushed up to get a better look at it,  and it looked viscous ! After that we went to the Rhinos and their horns were massive it was crazy, we heard them making such cool noises or it was just me, and even got to feel one of their horns, in my opinion it didn’t feel too nice..  Did you know that its actually illegal to own a rhino horn ? Because Rhinos might go extinct because people chop of rhinos horns, and the rhinos need their horns because its their defence.

Im skipping through some enclosures because there was way to many! After lunch, we saw the boulder copper butterflies and the habitat that the kind workers had built for them, how nice is that? We saw the giant plants that they lay eggs in too. Then we saw our nocturnal bird the kiwi ! Pests like stoats, possums, rats, ferrets are eating the eggs and the baby kiwis thats sad. Then we saw the wonderful keas and they were getting feed some grubs but they had to dig with their beaks to get to them.

Lastly we saw the adorable baby otters and Meerkats so cute ! They looked like they had little beady eyes, and fluffy skin. I would definitely go again it was so cool and interesting!

Have you been to Orana Park? If you have do think its cool?

Maddie Davidson 🏅

Maddie Davidson came to our school ( The Olympic trampolinist ) I was so surprised that an Olympian came to our school. If you don’t know who Maddie Davidson is she is a Olympic trampolinist her full name is Madeline Davidson. She is 26 years and she went to the Olympics at Tokyo in 2020 but sadly only came tenth because she was so nervous she forgot her whole routine and started making up something random. You need to do 10 tricks to finish but she only did nine tricks and she didnt let that slide. So she came back NZ  and had a chat to her coach in the middle of a busy gym and said ” I think I want to become a champion…” Her coach was like “you think?  No you want to become one! Say it out loud!!!   “So she did and it was embarrassing. And that was part of her story not the whole thing.  She inspired me as well !

Do you know what trampolining  is?

Adults On The Sideline Discussion

This week in my discussion group that is Isabel,  Zoey, Sophia, Jack, Nikau, Tia, and me of course . We have talked about adults on the sidelines and their behaviour.  Some adults on the sidelines get too carried away and start yelling and shouting at the referees and players on the field especially in children’s games. This can make children feel sad and maybe wanting to quit playing the sport they desire to play.  6 out of 10 kids have been shouted at or got told instructions like they don’t know how to play their game. Our group thought was why do they do this and why do they shout at kids and referees like they don’t know how to play or run the game?

Something that they could do is calm down and stop shouting!

Do you think it’s appropriate or inappropriate that adults are shouting out instructions and yelling at kids ?

Boulder copper butterfly

In reading we have been learning about the ¨Boulder Copper Butterfly¨ . We watched a video of how Burnside school made an area( for them because they were nearly going extinct but because of burnside they are back in  Christchurch !  They have a really interesting scientific name and that is… Lycaena boldenarum! That’s really cool right?! The caterpillars eat something called ¨ Creeping Pohuehue ¨ while the adult butterflies feed on nectar.

Here’s a picture of how the Boulder Copper Butterflies look like! Do you find them interesting??

If you look closely the male is more colourful than the female!

Sensory Writing

In writing we have been focusing on adding sensory details. Sensory details make the reader imagine how something felt, tasted, smelt, or looked like. In my opinion, now that I have learnt how to put sensory details in my writing properly, it  makes it a whole heap more interesting. I made a video of me reading my sensory story!

Check it out !!

Do you think sensory details makes writing funner?

Division !!

In Room 1 everybody  has been learning about division and easy ways to get the correct answer! There’s this really easy strategy to ace division everytime ! It might look quite hard and look impossible, but really it’s not that hard. In the video below this text is Me and Elise explaining how to ace this strategy straight away! Trust me, its okay if it takes you some time to fully understand this strategy and it’s also okay if you already know this strategy but you just need a refresher! Division Video

Do you understand division now?

Do you do division in math at your school?

Extended Discussion 🗣

For the last couple of days room 1 has been having Extended discussions.  I was in group two and Sophia, Zoey, Jack, Tia, Nikau, and Isabel were as well. Before we started our discussion we went over some ground rules, like, you have always got to remember to listen to other people’s ideas/respect others ideas. After going over all the ground rules we start reading our scenario! Our scenario was about living in a Mars dome near New Brighton pier for one year with heaps of 10 year olds. Some of the questions that we asked were…

¨ What would the three thing we would bring to live in the Mars dome?¨

I thought to myself and same did everyone else in my group, but the main things that  everyone said were…

¨Food, Water, and a blow up bed!¨

Which is very reasonable to me, we asked some questions and listened to other people’s ideas then we reviewed our discussion by thinking about how we did. Our group score was 14/18!

Would you like to live in a Mars dome for a year with a bunch on ten year olds?
